Since the Minecraft cape is usually a souvenir, it can be obtained at events, Minecraft Live conventions, or as a reward for completing a specific task, such as transferring a Mojang account. Below we have more details on how to get Minecraft capes for you, no matter what version of the game you’re playing.

Different ways to get a cape in Minecraft:

  • Transfer your Mojang account
  • Own game!
  • Play the Bedrock version
  • Exclusive Layers
  • mods for minecraft

Transfer your Mojang account

In 2020, Mojang announced that it would migrate all Minecraft Java Edition accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a required change and you should already be prompted to do so if you have an old Mojang account.

If you’ve done it before, or when you do, you’ll unlock a shiny new layer. New Minecraft accounts are automatically set up with Microsoft instead of Mojang and will unfortunately not have the option to get the Migrator cape.

own game

In 2022 Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock (aka Windows) Edition merged into a single launcher with Minecraft Dungeons and any other future games like Minecraft Legends. To celebrate the merger, players who owned both the Java and Bedrock PC versions of the game on the same account were rewarded with a vanilla overlay on both versions. Again, unfortunately, if you don’t already have it, you won’t be able to get it anymore, but if you find it in your collection, now you know why!

Play Bedrock Edition

The Panoramic Cloak, as shown above, is issued to all Bedrock Edition players and can be equipped in the Layers tab of the Bedrock Locker Room. With the elytra, the “bread-layer” looks like a pancake with butter and maple syrup, doesn’t it?

Other cloaks can be awarded to Bedrock players, as the Founder’s cloak is another exclusive cloak that will be awarded to existing players in the game in 2019.

Exclusive Layers

Those who decided to attend a Minecon event before Minecon Earth 2017 received Minecraft capes; each year a different color and design. Even rarer are personal capes given to the lucky ones in recognition of their achievements, like Reddit user u/billyk_ who received a personal turtle cape for suggesting that Mojang add turtles to Minecraft.

If you can’t come up with as good a suggestion as turtles (unlikely) or if you can time travel to the past of the Minecons, it sounds like you’re out of luck getting your hands on one of these Minecraft raincoats in the Java version.

Get a raincoat in Minecraft with mods

So capes are still pretty rare in Java Minecraft and we don’t know when the next fan-exclusive cape will be released, so if you’re desperate for your avatar to have a cape immediately, and you are not interested in a free migration raincoat? Fortunately, with the help of mods, you can roar your own cape behind you as you walk! You can get any of the coveted capes in the game, or better yet, any cape you can imagine, using mods like the Advanced Capes Mod.

There is one caveat: other players you meet on Minecraft multiplayer servers will not be able to see your cape unless they have the same mods installed. So the only way to get capes that everyone can see is to wait for Mojang to offer you the official capes when transferring your account.

How to equip raincoats in Minecraft

It should be noted that if you are playing the Java and Bedrock version of the game, your capes are exclusive to that version, so your Java capes will not appear in your Bedrock wardrobe, and vice versa.

java version

If you have the official Minecraft Java Edition cape, you can find it in the Skins section of the Minecraft launcher. Go to the Masks tab, select the mask you want to add your layer to, then click Duplicate or Edit. From there select the layer you want to add and save it as a new skin selection.

It is better not to remove the cape, as it can be disabled in the game. To remove the cape, go to the game options, select Skin Customization, and set the cape to Off.

For the Bedrock version, launch the game and then click on the tab on the left side of the screen with the red cape with the Mojang logo on it. This will display all of your available raincoats, so choose one and hit put.

Put your cape on your elytra

You don’t have to do anything to put the cape on the elytra. Conversely, if you have a cape, when you equip an eltira, your wings will automatically take on the appearance of your cape! Coldness!
