Valve announces Counter-Strike 2 with playtest and launch window

After weeks of waiting and much speculation, Valve confirms Counter-Strike 2 with a trailer outlining the map changes.

Counter-Strike 2 is scheduled to release in summer 2023, but the limited trial period begins today for select CSGO players. In the press release sent to PCGamesN, Valve talks about everything that will be in CS2.

“Counter-Strike 2 is the biggest technical leap in Counter-Strike history, and it delivers new features and updates for years to come,” says Valve. “All of the game’s new features will be revealed when it officially launches this summer, but the road to Counter-Strike 2 begins today as a limited test for select CS:GO players.

“During this testing period, we will test a subset of features to fix any issues before the global release. Counter-Strike 2 will be released this summer as a free update to CS:GO. So get your gear ready, hone your skills, and get ready for what’s to come.”

All CSGO maps have been remastered with Source 2, giving them brand new visuals. The cards have been divided into three categories. Hotfix maps have been completely rebuilt in Source 2 from the ground up and include Overpass. The “updated” maps retain their CSGO geography, but have been tweaked with physics and lighting technologies from Source 2: Nuke was confirmed as an update map.

Finally, Touchstone maps like the classic Dust 2 are used to highlight some of the visual changes between CSGO and CS2 and have had minor changes in terms of effects and textures but are otherwise unchanged.

All Source 2 rendering tools and features will be available to community mappers in Counter-Strike 2.

Rebuilds the physics of the smoke, as well as lighting and other dynamic effects. Smoke now dissipates when you shoot through it, filling the environment more realistically.

Movement and shooting will no longer be affected by the server tick rate, allowing for a much smoother CS2 gaming experience.

Come summer and CSGO transitions to CS2, you’ll still keep all your items, only now they’ll be visually enhanced with Valve’s latest engine.

“Take your entire Counter-Strike 2 CSGO inventory with you,” says Valve. “Not only will you keep all the items you’ve collected over the years, but they’ll all benefit from the lighting and materials from Source 2.

“In addition to supporting legacy models and skins, all standard weapons have been updated to high-resolution models, and some weapon skins take advantage of these new models.”

The sound has been redesigned, as well as the physical elements and the entire user interface of Counter-Strike.
