Ray tracing is all the rage right now, but Cyberpunk 2077 could help make path tracing a viable gaming PC feature. While you need one of the best graphics card options to get the most out of the rendering technique, CD Projekt Red says it’s working with Nvidia to make this method the preferred option.

To know more about Cyberpunk 2077 Route TrackingPCGamesN spoke at GDC 2023 with Jakub “Kuba” Knapik, CDPR Global Art Director and Vice President of Arts. Describing the publisher’s ambitions, Cuba revealed that the technology will be used to enhance releases like the Phantom Liberty expansion, but it won’t rejuvenate back-catalog favorites like The Witcher 3.

At this point, you may be wondering, “What is route tracing?” Well, Cuba calls it “film representation” because it has been used in film production for over a decade. If you’ve ever been mesmerized by the 3D renderings of a recent Pixar movie, you probably have path-tracking to thank, providing that impressive sense of depth that makes Disney animation stand out.

Of course, Cuba says that this feature requires “very powerful” PC hardware right now, so you’ll need a GPU like the one we tested in our Nvidia RTX 4090 review to take advantage of path tracking in 2023. games, the art director says that AI tools like DLSS 3 and Nvidia’s Frame Generation will provide the “extra headroom” needed to improve frame rates and performance.

In a way, CDPR could be a pioneer in the field of routing, helping to advance the technique of rendering over conventional configurations. While this feature is technically compatible with all graphics cards, the developer is working with Nvidia to make it an affordable ray tracing successor. The GPU giant has already teased this technology with its Portal RTX update, but its inclusion in the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion is arguably a huge step forward that will showcase what it has to offer to the PC gaming scene.

We’ll have to wait for Cyberpunk 2077 RT: Overdrive’s new mode setting to make our own judgement, but Cuba insists that Phantom Liberty is amazing with route tracking. We’ll likely see this improve images for other CDPR releases in the future, but the developer is still working on adding it to Unreal Engine 5 projects.

Path Tracking Cyberpunk 2077 will debut on April 11 in patch 1.62, so stay tuned for our impressions and tests. Please remember that this is a technical preview, so unexpected errors may appear and cause noise.
