Sam Barlow, co-creator of Shattered Memories, Her Story, and Silent Hill’s Immortality, told PCGamesN that the third-person 3D game he was previously working on could still be released, and that its signals could be based on subversive activities. genre tropes established by God of War, Uncharted, and The Last of Us.

Speaking exclusively to PCGamesN live from the San Francisco showroom during this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC), Barlow explains how the project was initially shelved during Immortality’s development, but could run out of storage.

“He was put on hold during Immortality,” says Barlow. “It can be without rest. With a 3D game, vanity made us say, “Hey, this is a third-person, character-based game.” There is movement in space; there is intelligence. But this is not a game in which the story will unfold on the “A, B, C” principle.

Barlow explains how the untitled 3D game will tell the story in a “non-linear” way, using lessons from Immortality to write and explore the narrative using a different form than recent story-driven games like The Last of Us and God of War. War.

“It wouldn’t be like, as far as I understand them, games like God of War or Uncharted, which are deeply immersed in the idea of movies and stories,” says Barlow. “They have act faults. They do five acts. And something like The Last of Us translates directly to an HBO show because they treated it the same way they did when they made it.

So what was so different about this idea [the unnamed 3D game] I should have said, “Actually, we don’t need all that.” The biggest thing with Immortality and the previous games was to treat the story the same way you treat a planet in a Metroid game. You do not perceive this planet linearly. You benefit from coming back: you learn and build a mental model of it. The most interesting is in your imagination”.

Barlow also offers more precise details on how this game might work, describing how it eschews the typical “branching narrative” structure of any story or choice-based game in favor of “span”.

“It’s not a branching narrative,” he says. “It is not about causation. It’s not a plot where you just change tracks. It’s about storytelling where you can explore the full breadth of story content.”

Coming soon, PCGamesN will bring you an exclusive in-depth interview with Sam Barlow, revealing all of his past work and plans for the future. In the meantime, we’ll be reporting live from the GDC showroom, along with more information on upcoming games, major announcements, and the biggest hits of 2023.

You can also try some of the single player games or the best indie games if you are a big fan of Sam Barlow’s work.
