If you haven’t tried Terraria Shimmer yet, you’re missing out. A mysterious new liquid has been introduced in the Terraria 1.4.4 update, Labor of Love, and it has been one of the most fun additions to one of the best sandbox games on PC since its release over ten years ago. Now it looks like it will be easier to use than ever, thanks to the addition of the Shimmer water gun.
Shimmer is a magical substance that can be found in the hidden mini-biome after the Labor of Love update. We will not describe everything that it does here, but suffice it to say that it offers a wide range of possibilities. You can transform many crafted items into your components, transform certain resources and equipment into new and more powerful forms, and even apply some pretty spectacular effects to your own player if you’re ready to make a splash.
Perhaps most important here, however, is Flicker’s ability to transform various enemies, creatures, and even the appearance of NPCs in your town. It has a number of neat applications, including the ability to completely redesign the appearance of everyone in your Terraria world to bring a fresh drop to your server.
The problem is that NPC transformation is currently a bit of a complicated process. Currently, you can only apply effects by dunking characters or enemies into glowing pools. So you need to create a dunk tank in a convenient location, and then convince your NPCs to go there so you can drop them there. Enter the water gun.
Highlighting on Twitter how cool all of the flashy NPC options are, Terraria YouTuber James “ChippyGaming” Bennett says, “I wish we had a flashy squirt gun one day so I could see them more often.” In response, Re-Logic president Andrew “Redigit” Spinks simply publications a sprite image that looks exactly like this. Great news and we can’t wait to start spraying Shimmer everywhere; It might even unlock the potential to use it on some bosses for unique results, but only time will tell.
Lead artist Victor ‘Crowno’ Moura adds: “There’s nothing like having your wish granted before you ask,” suggesting the tool is likely already in development. Moura also gives a fun side story to the skins, calling them “my favorite thing I did in the last update.” He Observations that Zoologist Shimmer’s sprite is actually based on his original concept for the character, which ultimately wasn’t the design the team was looking for, so he’s happy to see him return as an official Shimmer variant.
Please note that although Redigit provides the included Shimmer weapon sprite, the header image for this article is purely an artist’s impression on my part. The NPCs are not that big. For now.
