What is Veil in Destiny 2?? It’s a question that many Guardians have when many characters mention this mysterious item during the Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign. It’s particularly unusual because Bungie is usually pretty good at seeding many of its own names in Destiny’s notoriously circumstantial lore, and The Veil’s ubiquity is relatively sudden.
But don’t worry – in this guide, we’ll cover everything we know about The Veil in Destiny 2, what it is, why everyone wants it, and where it came from. Please note that there are some spoilers ahead for the Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign, and Bungie still has a lot to reveal.
What is the Veil in Destiny 2?
The Veil is a paracausal item hidden somewhere in Neomun that was once used by the Witness to create a portal of light and dark. Specifically, it appears to be hidden deep within the Ishtar collective compound on Neomun.

Rasputin was the first to tell us about the Veil in a pre-recorded message at the end of Season of the Seraphim after sacrificing himself to destroy the military satellites that Eramis confiscated in his attempt to destroy the Traveler.
Unfortunately, as Rasputin tells us in his pre-recorded message, accurate the location of the veil and all knowledge of its power has been suppressed by someone whose identity is unknown. This all works well with Lightfall, as the campaign is essentially a race between the Guardians and the Witnesses to get to Neomuna and find the Veil first.

As featured in Destiny 2’s Lightfall campaign, the Veil is a majestic tree-like structure of cascading light. We learned earlier from Savatûn that the Wanderer isn’t the only one of its kind, and in Lightfall our Specter points out that the Veil is similar to the Wanderer. Somehow, the connection between the Veil and the Traveler allows the Witness to open a portal, though it’s still unclear where it leads. There are theories that the Veil and the Wanderer act like a key and lock each other, but the truth of their existence is muddled in Lightfall’s current story.
