The Minecraft Legends update from developers Mojang and Blackbird Interactive reveals some of the tools you’ll have at your disposal in the upcoming spin-off of the Minecraft strategy game. Along with the usual weapons you might expect, the gear shows how you’ll use the power of music to summon and guide your troops, with the ability to learn new songs that unlock defensive and offensive options.
Your hero’s sword is your starting weapon in Minecraft Legends and it’s a fairly reliable tool, but it’s not suited for taking out enemies or larger structures and pig portals, which means it’ll be relegated to an alternative option. pretty fast. Instead, the hero’s lute will become one of your primary means of influencing the world, using it to play specific tunes that will galvanize your populace into action.
Gathering resources, constructing and dismantling buildings, summoning mobs and friendly golems from nearby spawns – all of this is handled with separate songs that you’ll sing with lute in hand. Found tunes are stored in the songbook for quick access, and as you progress, you’ll receive “highly effective (read: explosive) builds that can be used both defensively and offensively.”
In addition to your musical talents, you can also use your Banner of Courage to rally nearby allies, force them to follow you, target structures, or attack outlying bases. There’s also the option to switch to banner view, a special menu that gives you full control over individual units, which will be welcomed by experienced RTS players.
Mounts are an integral part of Minecraft, and another item features prominently in Minecraft Legends. You’ll start with a trusty horse, but as you adventure, you can unlock and recruit other mounts, each with unique abilities like moving faster or climbing walls.
In addition to all this, you will carry on the side of your steed a small flaming cage: the Flame of Creation. As long as they continue to burn, you can use them to summon enemies, just like traditional Minecraft spawners do. Once you repel pig attacks on your farms, you can also light the Flame of Creation there to build more spawners and attract additional mobs to help you defend settlements.
You’ll also want to regularly visit your base of operations in the Pit of Doom, as there are many upgrades you can craft to enhance your own abilities. These include gathering more allies at the same time, building more buildings at the same time, and storing more resources. As you progress, you’ll even discover “new allies and unique buildings” to add to your repertoire. You can’t take every upgrade though, so choose carefully!
There’s just over a month to go until Minecraft Legends launches, so make sure you’re ready for action by playing the best real-time strategy games on PC, as well as some of the best crafting games if you need more to shake off the minecraft itch.
