As Redfall’s release date approaches, Arkane’s approach to open-world gaming with the studio’s signature design and immersion is capturing everyone’s attention. The shooter can be played in both co-op and single player, so there are questions about how Redfall will fit into what Arkane has done before, and the studio has some answers.

Redfall Production Manager Ben Horn spoke to IGN about Arkane’s approach to their new game, as well as Redfall’s new gameplay.

“Left 4 Dead is an amazing game, but we wanted to create something that we feel has Arkane’s DNA in it,” says Horn. “Games like Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Prey, and most recently Deathloop. You can think of all of these games as a Venn diagram where they intersect in really key areas where we like to tell stories.”

Horn adds that for Dishonored that distinction meant stealth, for Prey it meant physics, and for Redfall it means a focus on worldbuilding. “I think it’s natural to model games a certain way and say, ‘We want to take what we like here and we want to break that mold.’ Making a great open world game was like breaking the mold for us.”

You can see the new gameplay of Redfall in the following video.

It was also recently revealed that Redfall will always require an online connection, even in single player, and Horne said striking a balance between players who decide to dive in completely solo and those who want up to three friends to join the game. He was amazing. difficult.

However, when playing with friends there is no link, which means that if there are four of you, you can all go to every corner of the map and do whatever you want whenever you want.

With Redfall being Arkane’s first foray into open worlds as FromSoftware since last year’s Elden Ring, there were understandably a lot of questions about how the game would work for immersive sim creators. Arkane says that Redfall will be more like Far Cry than Left 4 Dead, as exploration will play a key role instead of taking place in smaller, linear levels. Steam is also running a huge Bethesda sale that includes discounts on many Arkane games like Dishonored, Deathloop, Prey, and more, so be sure to check it out if you want to dig into the studio’s work ahead of Redfall. .
