Nvidia’s RTX 4000 gaming laptops are finally available for purchase, but the RTX 4090 models seem to have the same performance as the RTX 4070 Ti. This is perhaps not surprising given that the model doesn’t use the same AD102 GPU as the desktop card, but it may challenge the naming conventions adopted by the green team.
The best gaming laptop options, whether armed with an RTX 4090 or not, can trade blows with full desktop setups – there’s not a lot of power in a fancy package. Thermal performance, battery life, and overall instability are important factors to consider when building a portable power station, and performance trade-offs must be made to find the perfect balance. However, the gap seems a bit bigger this time around with the mobile RTX 4090, with results on par with a two-tier naming card.
As Wccftech points out, ITHome’s Nvidia RTX 4090 benchmarks show the GPU to be as fast as an RTX 4070 Ti or an RTX 3090. The comparison is based on 3DMark results for Asus ROG Strix Scar 17, the flagship model. with 13% more points than ROG. Strix. Scar 17. as Raytheon Zero 2023 tested by MyDrivers.
Additionally, the AD104 GPU in the new RTX 4080 laptops is 25% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti at 4K (according to Jarrod’sTech). Again, we’re not surprised by the performance differences between the RTX 4000 desktop and mobile graphics cards, but Nvidia might confuse its consumer base with a slightly larger gap. In the past, the green team used the letter “m” to indicate that the laptop used a downsized GPU, but today’s naming convention makes this fact less obvious.
The situation also creates a bit of a headache with the recommended PC specs, as the graphics card in your setup is not necessarily the same as the one suggested by the developers. For example, if you plan to buy an RTX 4000 laptop that meets Forspoken’s system requirements, you won’t be able to match the ultra settings even with an RTX 4090 machine. That’s not to say the same problem doesn’t exist. throughout the lifecycle of the RTX 3000 line. but it looks like it will get worse with Lovelace.
That being said, Nvidia’s line of RTX 4000 laptops is still impressive and will give anyone who leaves Ampere a huge boost in performance. Nvidia DLSS 3 support also sweetens the deal as it will help you get ten times the frame rate in some games that use frame generation. Just keep in mind that the RTX 4090 that lives on in future mobile machines isn’t in the same league as its desktop counterpart, and the same will likely be true of future releases like the RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 when they finally hit the stage.
