Inclusion or marketing? Hogwarts heritage introduces transgender characters

Since the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Games has been trying to separate the game from currently controversial book author JK Rowling by making transphobic statements on her Twitter and supporting anti-trans feminist groups even going so far. as stated in the official FAQ for the game, that the author is not related to the project. Despite this, Rowling’s transphobia has tainted the Harry Potter franchise as a whole, creating a problem for the Hogwarts Legacy video game.

To demonstrate that this is inconsistent with the author’s opinion, the game features a transgender character that players can interact with in the Three Broom Tavern named Sirona Ryan. Watch the video WITH SPOILERS showing the character:

Transgender characters in Hogwarts Legacy

After Rowling’s comments, Hogwarts Legacy developers distanced themselves from the author and made it clear that she was not involved in the development of the game. That hasn’t stopped some fans from calling for a boycott of Legacy of Hogwarts, with some arguing that buying the game means supporting Rowling’s transphobic views. Despite this, the developers continue to work to distance themselves from Rowling’s transphobic views, even adding a transgender character to the game.

Hogwarts Legacy allows players to visit Hogsmeade, a small magical village located relatively close to Hogwarts Castle. One of Hogsmeade’s most popular establishments is The Three Broomsticks, an inn/pub that Harry Potter and his friends visit several times in the books and films. If players visit The Three Broomsticks at Hogwarts Legacy, they will have the opportunity to meet the owner Sirona Ryan, who happens to be transgender.

Despite Sirona being a female character, Sirona’s voice is clearly male and the voice actor is uncredited.

Sirona has a minor involvement in some of the Hogwarts Legacy quests, but does not play a significant role in the game other than her position as owner of the Three Broomsticks. By talking to her, players can learn a little more about her past. Without getting into spoilers, players have the option to ask Sirona why she trusts another character in the game. Ryan knew him before the transition. They had not seen each other for many years, but when they met again, he immediately recognized her. “That’s more than I can say about some of my classmates. It took them a second to realize that I was actually a witch and not a sorcerer,” she explains.

The decision to include a transgender character in The Hogwarts Legacy received controversy. Avalanche was praised by some for this move, seeing it as a challenge to J.K. Rowling’s transphobic views. Others have accused the studio of including a “token transgender character” to try and distance the game from the author. Some, more reactionary, claim they only bought the game to support the author’s transphobic views.

In an interview with IGN, a spokesperson for Porterkey Games, when asked if the inclusion of the character was a response to the author’s transphobic outbursts, said that “The team felt it was very important to create a game that would represent the rich and diverse world of Harry Potter, as well as the groups of people who play it, including the LGBTQIA+ community. We have a variety of characters that players will encounter throughout the game.”

Sirona Ryan isn’t the first transgender character in video games, but she’s certainly going to be one of the most famous when all is said and done, and there’s a lot to be said for that no matter why she was added to the game. . Now the question remains: did it work to appease the fans, or is it just Warner marketing trying to quell a case of prejudice? Only players who have bought the game and are playing can reply.
