Destiny 2 Lightfall downtime will last 24 hours until the DLC is released

According to a recent Bungie blog post as part of the This Week at Bungie series, Destiny 2 Lightfall’s maintenance downtime will last 24 hours. The maintenance will precede the Destiny 2 Lightfall release date, which includes the release of Destiny 2 Season 20 and the Destiny 2 Strand subclass in an FPS game. However, Destiny 2 players can pre-install Lightfall during this time, according to TWAB.

“Please note that the downloaded file will be large, but this clean install will reduce download times and overall disk space usage will be less afterwards,” the message reads.

Ultimately, the downtime means that Guardians should plan to complete all Destiny 2 Season 19 backlogs before the scheduled maintenance downtime beginning February 17 00 UTC. While Bungie hasn’t explicitly explained why the game requires this downtime, the game’s completely offline mode ensures that the team can check for bugs when transferring your test build to Destiny’s live servers.

While such a crash isn’t unusual for Bungie in the run-up to new DLC, this planned downtime stems from complaints that the game’s architecture might need an update. Destiny 2 DLC releases are often messy, with some players trying to access the servers even hours after the DLC’s scheduled release. At TWAB, Bungie admitted that they expect this to happen with Lightfall. Additionally, recent reports of various error codes and player reports of losing progress on Triumphs have some wondering if Destiny 2’s entire infrastructure needs an overhaul to better support the popular live-service space game.

An unconfirmed Destiny 2 leak suggests that Bungie plans to take a year-long hiatus from Destiny 2 following the release of Destiny’s current story last year, which will be part of a DLC called The Final Shape. Final Shape will be released in 2024. The leak suggests that Bungie is using this time to restore the overall infrastructure of the game.

The Lightbearers still have a few weeks to complete their unfinished Season of the Seraph quests. If you haven’t yet explored everything this season has to offer, you only have a few weeks left to complete Destiny 2’s Exotic Overhaul Zero quest and earn its catalysts before the new season begins.
