As the release of Dead Space Remake approaches, developers Motive Studio say the horror game is so scary they can’t play it at night with headphones on – promising news for fans of Isaac Clarke and the likes of ‘ Ishimura, and the adult diaper industry, as we rapidly approach the Dead Space release date.
When was the last time a horror game literally scared you into playing it? I personally struggled with Alien Isolation – there’s a section towards the end where the lights are off and you’re in a nest of corridors with about five open vents above you, and it seems like every move you make can summon a Xenomorph.
Terror in games is a difficult balance. Get too scared and we might decide to walk away. Play too well and the whole effect will wear off.
One of the best old games, the original Dead Space was a combination of action and fear. However, its upcoming remake seems to be stepping on the fear pedal much harder, to the point that its own creators are afraid of what they have brought into the world.
“When I play it at night, I can’t play it with my headphones on,” Dead Space CTO David Robillard said in an interview with Play published on GamesRadar. “It’s fucking scary. Quite realistic and, once again, setting. Not just visually, right? They really add a lot to this genre and tie the whole experience together even more.
Perhaps the scariest part of Dead Space is the medbay, which judging by gameplay trailers will return in the Remake. However, some sections of the original game have been changed and redesigned, and Motive claims that they aim to improve weaker sections or items.
“At the beginning of the game, if you play them side by side, they are very similar,” explains Philippe Ducharme, Senior Producer at Motive. “But then when you go through certain chapters, there are objectives that weren’t that popular.
“We wanted to make sure that if we made a change, it really reflected one of our key pillars…not just make a change because we thought we knew more than the original team because they did an amazing job.”
When you return to Ishimura, if you want to avoid getting hacked, check out all the new weapon upgrades in Dead Space. You can also find out who is in Dead Space and who is not, or maybe get all the Dead Space system requirements before the game launches.
