Battlefield 2042 Class System Update Will Limit Devices Per Class

The long-awaited update to the class system is coming soon to Battlefield 2042 and brings some key changes without abandoning the controversial specialized system introduced in the 2021 multiplayer release.

In a new blog post, the EA/DICE developer explained some of the reasons behind his approach to the change and the feedback he used to shape this version of the class system. The developers explain that players needed readability: being able to quickly identify other players in a match and know who should play what role. Testers also wanted a “greater sense of role” or the ability to say what they should do and how their chosen class made it possible.

Previous Battlefield games have attempted to do this in different ways, with some entries restricting certain weapon types to certain roles, such as sniper rifles only being available to scout players. It won’t happen this time: EA/DICE say it would be too disruptive to the established progression system to tie the best Battlefield weapons to specific classes.

Instead, gadgets will only be available to their respective classes, and the breakdown of gadgets into which classes has changed slightly since the system was first announced. In the future, for example, only Engineer-class specialists will be able to slot Rocket Launchers into their gadgets.

Although the use of weapons is unlimited, each class gains weapon proficiency that is associated with a specific type of weapon. For example, Assault Specialists get three extra magazines when using Assault Rifles and Supports get faster draw times for SMGs.

It’s worth noting that all specialists will retain their individual specialist abilities, a move that has sparked controversy in the Battlefield community. Some specialists in Battlefield 2042 have powerful special abilities; a good example is Pyke’s EMG-X scanner, which allows him to see the outlines of enemies through level geometry.

Combine that with wingsuits and boarding rifles that allow anyone to sneak behind enemy lines, and players are complaining that these changes to the class system won’t sound as big as they do on paper.

The new class system is coming to Battlefield 2042 with Update 3.2 at the end of January.
