You can build colossal structures in Dwarf Fortress, but even with the graphically enhanced Steam version of the influential colony management game, you’re limited to viewing one horizontal slice at a time. Well, those days are over as the mighty Dwarf Fortress mod has been updated to support the Steam version and includes a 3D rendering tool.
DF Hack is a powerful Dwarf Fortress utility that has been around for years, but has just been updated with a beta version that supports the new version of Steam. It’s basically a cheat engine for Dwarf Fortress, allowing you to access almost anything in the game and use the command line to change whatever variables you want.
However, in termes pratiques, c’est un moyen d’utiliser de nombreux plugins qui le font pour vous, et l’un d’eux s’appelle Stonesense, un autre mod Dwarf Fortress qui es disponible dans la versión originale ASCII depuis Years. Opens a new window where the game you loaded is displayed in a 3D isometric view and you can see multiple z-levels of your fortress at the same time. When you run it, three levels are displayed by default, but by holding down the CTRL key and scrolling the mouse wheel, you can increase or decrease the number of levels displayed.
The results can be quite incredible, and Dwarf Fortress players have displayed impressive ingenuity over the years, erecting towering stone structures at the entrances to their subterranean realms and mighty statues that dominate the surrounding landscape.
To install, go to the DFHack home page and follow the installation instructions for your operating system. You can download the latest version here. Extract the .zip file and copy the files to the root folder of your Dwarf Fortress installation and let the new .dll overwrite the one you have.
After that, DFHack is installed and you can use it on any of your existing backups. To use Stonesense or any other plugin included with DFHack, invoke the DFHack command line in Dwarf Fortress by pressing CTRL-Shift-D. You can then open the Stonesense renderer with the “stonesense” or “ssense” command.
A new window will appear and you will be able to see your fortress in 3D.
There are many other tools included with DFHack, and the documentation available on the home page can show you what they do and how to use them.
Dwarf Therapist, another extremely popular and useful mod, is now also available on Steam. Check out our list of the 100 best PC mods for more custom cheats that changed game history.
