According to a series of recent posts on Reddit, Destiny 2 characters are mysteriously being removed. In recent weeks, several players have reported that they suddenly found themselves without access to certain Destiny 2 characters. Some of these players have spent a lot of time developing these Guardians characters online. The looming threat of sudden character deletion is fast becoming a major problem for the popular FPS game.
In the most recent case, a Destiny 2 player reported on Reddit that upon logging in after days of inactivity, he was experiencing connection issues before the game “deleted” his warlock character. The Guardian even says that they went to Bungie’s help forums to explain the situation, but received general advice that didn’t directly address the issue. Via Twitter, a Bungie representative shared that they have reports on the player’s account, though it appears it hasn’t been restored yet.
A few days ago, another Reddit user shared an update that his own character, Warlock, had also suddenly disappeared. As of the last player update, they had not restored his character.
Last week, another player shared on Reddit that his Titan character disappeared after notifying the game server. 1500 game hours, now it only shows 200 game hours. While hours spent on a character shouldn’t affect gameplay, players can be proud to show their level of commitment through hours spent on a particular character.
Apparently someone removed one of your characters after receiving a “Communication with Destiny Servers” notification.

Destiny 2 will be shutting down on Stadia on January 18, leading many to wonder if the issue could be due to Stadia account related issues. Bungie advises players who have characters on Stadia accounts to back them up on all platforms using cross save to avoid losing them. However, at least one of the players claims that Stadia cross-save cannot be an issue in this case because the player does not have a Stadia account.
The removals come after complaints that Destiny 2’s game architecture needs major updates, due to a recent spike in issues like ANTEATER error codes affecting player attempts to connect to the game.
Some people now refuse to play because they are afraid of losing their characters. Bungie doesn’t seem to have an explanation for the random disappearances. Also, there doesn’t seem to be anything players can do to protect their characters. Bungie has yet to publicly comment on this.
Players suspect a bug, but there are no indications as to what could be causing it. Some reports claim to have seen as many as five people seek help with similar problems.
Bungie appears to be ready to work quickly to restore mistakenly removed player characters. However, Guardians, for fear of losing hundreds of hours of work, may not be able to access the game servers until Bungie resolves the issue. Those who experience the loss of these characters should contact Bungie immediately through the company’s help forums.
Hopefully Bungie can fix this before the Destiny 2 Lightfall release date and the introduction of the Destiny 2 Strand subclass. In the meantime, you can check out our list of the best free PC games for a list of other games to play until Bungie fixes the issues.
