The Hitman Freelancer mode, announced a year ago, will finally arrive this month, with a planned release date of January 26, developer IO Interactive has revealed. This mode turns Hitman 3 into a true sandbox game, removing all the pre-mission planning done by Agent 47’s controllers and allowing players to take down the Global Crime Syndicate any way they want.
The Freelancer campaign is a new version of the existing World of Assassination maps. Where before there were chains of events and scripted finishers, and each mission was isolated, like a separate murder sandbox, everything is more interconnected this time around. Agent 47 operates out of a safe house, collecting evidence on syndicate members who appear to be ordinary citizens.
Each mission will be player-driven: you choose where to go, what objectives you want to complete, and what equipment to take with you. IO Interactive states that “there is no guarantee that an objective will be possible during a mission” and that players will need to ensure that they select the correct locations, objectives, and equipment upon departure.
“There are no exciting scripted assassination missions,” says the developer. “Each iconic death in Hitman Freelancer is a new construction of systemic gameplay, foresight, and player creativity.”
You’ll get all the information you need to succeed, but nothing is set in stone: Freelancer has items that are random and “scroll independently.”
By destroying the loyal Syndicates one by one, Agent 47 is able to narrow down the list of possible leaders of the organization and then eliminate them. You will be able to harass any division of the organization you wish, and each will require a slightly different play style.
