Following the RTX update for Portal, one of Valve’s best first-person adventure game mods also gets a ray-traced update. Nvidia showed off some early images of the Portal: Prelude mod to highlight its new RTX Remix mod platform, and is working with the mod’s original creator on a new updated version.
Portal: Prelude lead modder Nicolas “Nyk018” Grevet worked with Nvidia and modder David Driver-Gomm, who created Raiser the Bar: Redux for Half-Life 2: Episode Two, on the remaster. Some images of the new ray-traced lighting in action can be seen at Nvidia’s special address at CES this year; if you use a cell phone, the segment begins at 10:25 p.m.:
Portal: Prelude tells the origin story of the passive-aggressive evil AI GLaDOS, who we learn was created to perform repetitive and boring tasks at Aperture Labs.
Modders update the assets used in the mod using the Nvidia RTX Remix platform, which uses the hardware company’s Omniverse to connect various creation tools.
Portal: Prelude RTX will be available soon and you will be able to download it for free from ModDB and Nexus Mods as soon as it is released. Naturally, you’ll need a copy of Portal to play.
Portal (like Portal 2) is still one of the best games on PC, so it’s worth picking up a copy if you haven’t played it yet.
