Resident Evil has inspired many horror games over the years, from Silent Hill to Dead Space to 2022’s Callisto Protocol. But there’s one third-person shooter with a particularly strong, if complex, connection to RE and Capcom, especially the excellent Resident Evil 2 2019 remake. If you haven’t played it yet and want to give it a try, the good news is that it’s already available as a completely free game on GOG for CDPR, but you’ll need to act fast.
Daymare 1998 originally began as an unofficial remake of Resident Evil 2, dubbed Resident Evil 2 Reborn. However, in 2015, a small development team from Invader Studios was invited to Capcom headquarters and asked to end the project, as an official remake was secretly being developed.
Rather than abandon the game entirely, Invader renamed it Daymare 1998 (after Resident Evil 2’s original release year) and even managed to enlist some RE series veterans to help with development: Satoshi Nakai, an enemy designer from Resident Evil Zero, joined the team. and Code Veronica, along with Kazuhiro Aoyama, director of the first Resident Evil 3.
The resulting game is a homage to RE’s cheesy horror roots. While investigating a leak at a chemical plant (that old chestnut), you play as various characters using limited ammo and saving points to defeat zombies and mutants while solving a series of logic puzzles.
It’s like an alternate take on the Resident Evil universe, lots of familiar ideas, but presented and styled differently. If you’re a huge horror fan and haven’t played Daymare 1998 before, it’s completely free on GOG until January 2, so grab it now.
