This, combined with other factors, nearly killed my desire to play video games until I got my hands on a portable powerhouse earlier this year: the Steam Deck.
A bit of history for you: In early 2022, I started to lose the desire to play anything. Thankfully these questions never needed to be answered as this is the best I’ve ever bought.
For those who don’t know, Steam Deck is a portable gaming PC. It’s slightly larger than the Nintendo Switch, much more powerful, and capable of playing almost your entire Steam library on the go. Battery life depends on the game you’re playing, it’s highly tweakable, and it’s based on a custom Linux operating system.
When I say it’s easy to edit, I mean it too. There are plugins you can install to change the number of cores used by your platform, you can change the main menu theme, and change the home screen. Since you can always switch to desktop mode, you can customize it however you see fit. Do you want a new operating system? Go ahead, continue! Do you want to change how your games are downloaded and where they are downloaded from? Clear! It’s a new level of freedom that console gaming has long lacked that has brought me back to this wonderful hobby.
Interestingly, since getting my Steam deck, I’ve spent more money buying games, which I think was part of the original deal. Even a fairly powerful gaming laptop I’ve had for a while couldn’t do it. Of course, a Steam Deck doesn’t always have to be a portable system. With the best Steam Deck, you can connect it to your TV and play at a resolution much higher than the standard 800p by selecting any game from your Steam library and playing it on your TV. It’s this cacophony of options that makes the Steam Deck so brilliant and one of the best releases of the year.
That doesn’t mean it’s completely perfect. There are some UI issues and you can’t download games when the Steam Deck is in sleep mode. This is a completely obscure solution that really limits you unless you want to sit back and make sure your device doesn’t decide to turn off while you wait. All of these issues can be fixed, and hopefully, in future iterations of the game.
Without my Steam Deck, I really don’t know where I would be right now. Will I continue working in this industry or do something else? Gambling has helped me regain my passion and I can’t appreciate its value. I love my gaming laptop PC and I don’t think that will change anytime soon.
