The HBO series The Last of Us will feature a member of the “infected family” that gamers have never seen before. The TV adaptation became a source of new news after showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin spoke at length with The New Yorker as they created buzz around the show ahead of its Jan.

An article in the New Yorker revealed that the script called for a never-before-seen zombie, an infected person “not like those seen in the game”, and that it required the involvement of concept artists from Naughty Dog, the game’s developer. This new variant of the infected worried Druckmann because he thought he might look “too cute”, but fellow showrunner Mazin assured him that it would look monstrous on television.
It seems that the program will do everything to humanize and empathize with these infected. While in the game they are mostly fighters and aggressors – enemies that must be eliminated in the level – or avoided in order to advance, HBO’s showrunners and writers have attempted to portray a different side of these tragic creatures.

“In the adaptation, extended shots allow viewers to appreciate the strange beauty of the creatures and even get to know their inner self.”, — wrote the correspondent of The New Yorker. This more empathetic representation requires consideration of make-up and wardrobe, as the clothes the creature wears or its appearance must be created to humanize it. Yes, the variant was described as “she”, so that’s a clue that was omitted from the article.
This new variant could also be due to his spending “years underground”, but that could have been an accident. At the very least, viewers can now look forward to this new creature in the series, which will add more novelty to those who are already familiar with the world presented in the games.
The infected approach could be more in line with Will Smith’s I Am Legend, in which people infected with viruses are shown as dangerous mutants, but with their own way of life and forming a new society. While The Last of Us may not be the first to feature more human zombies, it’s a different approach that remains somewhat fresh. Viewers will have to wait until January 15th to see how effective the image will be.
Episode “One of Us”
The released synopsis confirms that the production will be based on the first part of The Last of Us, released in 2013:
“The action takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, a tough survivor, is hired to get 14-year-old Ellie out of the oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job turns into a brutal and exciting journey as they traverse the United States and rely on each other to survive.”
Not much is known about the plot itself, only that some scenes from the game will appear, as well as scenes entirely created specifically for the series, based only on the game’s story. Therefore, it is unknown if the first season will fully cover the plot of the game. Filming takes place in Calgary, Canada and the cast includes Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie.
Hope in The Last of Us
The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic action, adventure and survival game for the PlayStation 3 published by Naughty Dog and distributed by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2013. In the story, we follow the spread of a fungus that, infecting a person, turns -a into a cannibal monster called the Infected, which ultimately destroys most of society. Joel is one of the survivors of this chaos and he sets out to help Ellie, a young girl who is apparently immune to the fungus, so she can possibly save humanity. With a lot of shooting, blood and action, the game was very well received by critics, reaching 95/100 on Metacritic.
