AMD RDNA 4: Release date, price, specifications and test rumors

The new AMD RDNA 4-based graphics cards will be here sooner than you might think, as the Red team is already hard at work on their next architecture. To help separate red herrings from credible rumors, here’s everything we know so far about the next-gen Radeon GPU.

AMD could win the coveted title of best graphics card when the company releases its RDNA 4 GPUs. However, it will need to offer a significant performance boost over current-gen RDNA 3-pixel drivers.

These upcoming Radeon cards will face stiff competition from Nvidia RTX 5000 and Intel Battlemage GPUs, which at least means PC builders will have plenty of options for their next graphics card.

AMD RDNA 4 is still in a very early stage of development, so all details about these pixel engines are subject to change. With that in mind, digest each bite deep down with a pinch of salt.

AMD RDNA 4 Release Date Rumors

The AMD RDNA 4 release date is expected in 2024, two years after the release of the Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX.

During the Financial Analyst Day presentation, AMD teased the arrival of its Navi 4x GPU-based RDNA 4 graphics cards. In the webcast, a slide could be seen showing the timeline of each RDNA iteration, ending with the fourth generation in 2024.

Based on the launch model of the Radeon RX 7000 series, we should expect the most powerful pixel makers to appear first, followed by the cheaper SKUs after a while.

AMD RDNA 4 Price Estimate

It will be a long time before we get any idea of AMD RDNA 4 pricing, as the Red team has yet to announce pricing for upcoming GPUs such as the Radeon RX 7800 XT and others.

However, we can get a rough estimate based on past releases and current trends. For example, the Radeon 7900 XTX and 6900 XT have the same $999 MSRP, but we probably won’t see that repeated with a potential 8000-series flagship (at least for now).

Considering that TMSC has increased the price of its wafers by as much as 25%, it’s reasonable to assume that we could see RDNA 4 break the four-digit price barrier.

AMD RDNA 4 Spec Rumors

All the information we’re hearing about AMD’s RDNA 4 specs is largely up to date until we get closer to making them public, but some preliminary details have emerged.

Sources close to RedGamingTech claim that RDNA 4 graphics cards can store up to 24GB of GDDR7 VRAM. Although this number doesn’t beat the 7900 XTX, it should be much faster than GDDR6 on this GPU.

These pixel boosters are also expected to use PCIe 5.0 and a new improved version of Infinite Cache. RGT says they’ve been told “3.5GHz seems easy,” but we’ve heard it before with RDNA 3.

AMD RDNA 4 Reference Speculation

Don’t expect AMD RDNA 4 benchmarks to appear anytime soon. At this point, we have at least a few crumbs of performance data.

Speaking to their sources, RedGamingTech said that AMD RDNA 4 will deliver “significant gains in ray tracing” and the Navi 4x GPU chips will deliver “more than double the performance of their predecessors.” How this will affect frame rates on each graphics card model remains to be seen.
