Old school RuneScape studio Jagex may be best known for its classic MMORPG, but it has just acquired the studio behind survival adventure game SCUM.
If you are a big fan of Scum, this is good news for you. According to a related press release, “Gamepires and Jagex’s community approach will allow Scum to reach its full potential with the cross-platform 1.0 release in the future.”
Jagex will also be using Hive Mind on all community issues to ensure Scum thrives post-launch. Phil Mansell, CEO of Jagex, said: “We believe in the vision of Tomislav, Andrey and their talented team, who have created a stunning open-world survival game, fostered an active community and built a strong and profitable business.
“With our support and the endorsement of our editorial team Jagex Partners, together we will make Scum an even bigger global success.”
Gamepires creative director and co-founder Tomislav Pongrak echoes this. “Our partnership with Jagex gives us the opportunity to take Scum to the next level,” he says. “Jagex’s world-class reputation as a gamer-driven game development company aligns with our philosophy and will help us grow as entrepreneurs and as a studio.
“We’re excited to see how we can build on what we’ve accomplished with Scum and unlock the game’s full potential.”
For those unaware, Scum sees abandoned players disguised as prisoners, alone on the island, desperate to escape. In Gamepires’ home country of Croatia, groups of up to 80 players fight for survival on an island while attempting to extract an implant that prevents them from escaping.
Released in 2018, the game has sold over three million copies and is in the top 100 on Steam. very Different from Old School RuneScape, I can’t wait to see what the studios do together.
