Jokingly created by a BioWare developer, the ending of Mass Effect 2 sees Commander Shepard abandon a suicide mission to passionately kiss and make amends with the villainous Phantom, in a total transformation of a classic RPG climax that could really shake the head. mass effect 3 story

Created by Mass Effect 2 film designer Violent McVinney, who now runs British game studio Long Way Home, the gripping “ending” was coined as a joke after development on ME2 wrapped. It shows Shepard recovering from a climactic suicide mission before standing up and running up to the antagonistic Illusionary Man and embracing him with a passionate kiss, all set to Aerosmith’s rousing chorus of “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.”

“So I had an interesting habit when I was at BioWare,” says McWhinnie. “The day after we finished creating a game, I would always shoot a short video imagining what it would be like if our characters kissed and made up.” Apparently another one of those gag endings is animated for Dragon Age, which McWinnie says he “needs to find.”

For players disappointed with the ending of Mass Effect 3, we can only imagine how Shepard and the illusory man falling head over heels in love could affect this narrative. Could this improve the situation? Who knows. But it’s fun to think what other video games would look like if they ended in a passionate embrace between the hero and the villain. Gordon Freeman kissing the G-Man, anyone?
