Review of the second series of the Mythic Quest series

Last year, the streaming service Apple TV+ premiered a new comedy series, Mythical Quest (the first episode was nicknamed “Raven’s Banquet”), created by one of the authors of the popular and sensational “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Rob McElhenney, who was also invited by his friend Charlie Day and Megan Ganz. This project was specific to the gaming community mainly because it dealt with video games as a natural part of the entertainment industry, which was also linked to Ubisoft, which co-produced it with Lionsgate.

In any case, the first series met with a generally positive reaction (our review can be read here), when it was among the few more successful projects on this streaming service (and there really are not many) that knocked out the second series, the first part of which premiered May 7th However, unlike the previous series, the strategy of releasing the entire series was abandoned at once, so we received individual episodes on a weekly basis, which personally suits me much more. The ninth/final episode subsequently aired on Friday, so now we can discuss whether or not to return to our famous heroes.

Another data drive, another problem

In fact, we continue directly with the eleventh bonus episode of the first season called Everlight (one of the best episodes of the series), when the employees of MQ Studios returned to the offices, where they want to come up with another data disk for the most popular MMORPG – Mythic Quest, which will be decided by the phenomenal Raven’s Banquet from the first series. However, this task proves to be a very difficult one, with several problems getting in the way, led by a relentless argument between two creative directors, Ian and Poppy, over such a small dispute between the Titans.

The story follows almost directly the eleventh bonus episode of the first series.

From this outline of the story, it might look like we’ll be riding the same tracks that the series was on in the first place, but the creators manage to move forward in a really non-violent way, so you won’t mind at all. In addition, the show’s greatest strength still lies in the drawn and interesting characters that have evolved quite a bit. Thus, the previously silent Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) has become a relatively uncompromising and vocal careerist, able to chase her dream through corpses, while Ian (Rob McElhenney) seeks to show her more human side and vulnerability. However, I must say that I was a little surprised by the rebirth of Poppy, when she became, perhaps, too unsympathetic character. Either way, this central duo can still rely on plenty of other interesting “sideline” characters, such as CFO Brad (Danny Pudi) getting extra layers while hapless unfortunate David (David Hornsby) still entertains with his silly and often inappropriate comments. However, a personal favorite is the employee of the personnel department – Carol (Naomi Ekperigin), whose work no one envies and steals every scene.

humor drama

From the script of the second series, it seems that the authors feel much more in convulsions, which is reflected, first of all, in the qualities of humor, which here does not seem as strained as in the case of the first series. So don’t get me wrong. You still can’t grab your stomach, but in the vast majority of episodes, you will have that same happy smile on your face throughout most of the footage, which causes either sometimes quite sullen behavior of the characters, or their statements, which often go straight to the camera. Also, I have to commend a certain amount of “wrongness” when the show runs with certain properties that today’s internet people would call “agitation”, but it’s relatively successful, it makes them quite funny and makes them sincere.

Humor works better and is more relaxed.

At the same time, however, the story still works great on a serious dramatic level, with an exploration of the lives of a large company and individual employees whose jobs can grind them down relatively reliably, thereby ruining their lives a bit. The highlight of this drama is once again a flashback sequence that offers us a glimpse into the past of one of the characters (who you might not expect too much from), who captivated me not only with a fantastic speech about video games and stories, but also with a rather tragic line. that she did not reach her happy ending until many years later.

Have a nice return

So I liked the second series more than the first, when the characters are still having fun and they have something to offer, so their fates will continue to interest you. In addition, the authors managed to polish the former sharp edges of not very functioning humor, which is handled much better here, while there is no frankly dead place.

I liked the second episode more than the first.

The only pity is that the development of the game itself is pushed even further into the background and basically, with one exception, does not correspond to current gaming trends (again, you will find various environments that are compiled from examples from different games, such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, World of Warcraft and others).

Mythic Quest can be watched on Apple TV+, which can be purchased for CZK 139 per month. The series also has Czech subtitles.

Consideration

Mythic Quest

We like

  • Drawn and funny characters
  • Humor works best
  • Still a successful dramatic line
  • Great sixth episode
  • A certain dose of wrong

it worries us

  • Poppy’s rebirth acts like a force
  • The development of the game itself was pushed even further into the background.
