Why are Steam Deck users obsessed with the smell of vents?

Several steam bridge users love the smell coming from the Pocket PC’s vents. The alluring scent is even supposed to empower Gabe Newell. I’ll clarify, it probably won’t, but it’s fun to imagine.

Steam Deck launched in February 2022 and soon there were reports of users enjoying sniffing the hot air it emits. In March, Reddit user ZanfrNFT noted that the smell wasn’t going away anytime soon, adding that it smelled like “burning plastic,” but hopefully it wasn’t burning.

It was at the start of this Steam Deck meme and many more chimed in to confess their love of sniffing vents. Now that it is possible to get a portable power station from Valve without joining the electronic queue, more and more users have been enjoying the electronic flavor lately. It should be noted that the odor is temporary, a sign that this is a new device out of the box.

People are not always involved in this process. Another Reddit user, Jcwhale, posted a cat image of him sniffing a steam bridge, or at least that’s what it looks like. There have also been some spoofed webcomics, like this one by Reddit user OrangelightningZING who reuses the Shen Comix tape to really highlight his love for sniffing out bridge vents.

Outside of Reddit, there are posts on Steam asking users if anyone else is into this scent hobby. Almost everyone seems to agree that deck smoke is irresistible.

Over time, as more people buy Steam Deck, the number of users who notice the “new car” smell will increase. It’s probably not the best idea to inhale it like freshly baked bread, but when your device isn’t on the best Steam Deck base, it’s hard to resist holding it up to your nose for a good breath.
