BUT steam bridge An enthusiast has found a solution for those who are having problems with their Valve laptop fans. The fix specifically addresses the noticeable “spike” that spins device fans up to 7300RPM, but the workaround may require an ounce of courage from those willing to try it.
Steam Deck user KMO_2000 on Reddit says he noticed an unexpected fan issue despite the portable gaming system showing no high temperatures or other signs of activity. For anyone who has come across this, this unofficial solution comes with a few caveats.
First, KMO_2000 indicates that the patch works with a 512GB Steam Deck model running SteamOS 3.3.2 Build 20221005.1. If you’re not sure which version you’re using, you can check in Settings > System. Also, the solution works on Samsung MZ9LQ512HBLU-00BVL SSD. You can find it at Desktop > System > Information Center > Devices > SMART Status.
It should be noted that desktop mode is recommended as command lines are required, which can be tricky without using the best Steam Deck. To fix the Steam Deck fan exploding issue, follow these steps:
- Enter desktop mode by pressing the Steam button, going to Power, and then selecting Switch to desktop.
- A password must then be provided in order to log into “sudo”; To do this, open the Konsole command and type the password without quotation marks
- Using Konsole, copy the Steam Deck fan config file using (the tab will auto-complete): cp /usr/share/jupiter-fan-control/jupiter-fan-control-config.yaml~
- After copying, you will need to open the file in your home folder using the KWrite device’s text editor.
- Change loop_interval from 0.2 to 0.25 and control_loop_ration from 5 to 4. Make sure to save it once done.
- Go back to the console and type “sudo steamos-readonly disabled” to make the file writable.
- Copy the modified configuration file by typing the following in the command: “sudo cp ~/jupiter-fan-control-config.yaml /usr/share/jupiter-fan-control/”.
- Type “sudo steamos-readonly enable” to return the file to read-only.
- Then it is recommended to go back to gaming mode and restart the updated fan control by toggling the UI switch. However, if you want to stay in desktop mode, use “sudo systemctl restart jupiter-fan-control.service”.
We hope this fixes the fan issues, especially for the 512GB model. We have to emphasize try this at your own risk, but one user reported that it worked. It is not yet known if Valve will offer a permanent fix at this time, but this fix should help anyone who wants to try it out.
