Resident Evil 4 Remake Easter Egg linked very well to RE2

Capcom recently shared detailed gameplay footage of Resident Evil 4 Remake that should reinforce the horror game series’ hauntings of the 2005 original, while also paying homage to it. This isn’t the only recent homage to the game we’ve seen, as Capcom directly referenced its 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 in minor detail.

As Capcom releases Resident Evil remakes alongside new entries in the series, the studio is working smarter, not harder, to allocate resources between games. Playing one after the other, you’ll notice some props and assets are reused, giving an interesting insight into the studio’s development process.

That’s exactly what happened with Combat Knife in Resident Evil 4 Remake, and while it seemed like a modest addition at first, Capcom’s gameplay demo showed the team trying to build a story through the old remake with item descriptions.

“Weapon suitable for close combat”, reads the description of the weapon in the images. “Leon has been using it ever since he got it while working at the RPD.”

You can check out the knife and its description in the middle of the opening video below (or start it yourself at 49:50).

Again, this is a very small but incredibly welcome addition to Resident Evil 4 Remake. This is, of course, a reference to Marvin giving Leon the knife in Resident Evil 2 Remake. Naturally, this raises questions about how Leon has kept an easy-to-break knife all these years, but that doesn’t break the realism, does it?

For me, this little Easter egg begs the question: what else will Capcom add to Resident Evil 4 Remake as a nod to their other recent remakes? To be honest, I would love to see a line with other links, if only to tie all these reinventions together.

If you want more Resident Evil 4 remakes, we recently compared Capcom’s Resident Evil showcase to Konami’s Silent Hill demo, and one of the two clearly won out.
