oculus quest 2 fans were shocked at the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation in August. Owlchemy Labs, best known for Vacation Simulator and Cosmonious High, has announced a new virtual multiplayer game without the support of traditional controllers. Instead, Owlchemy Labs, based on VR hand-tracking technology, tells PCGamesN more about how it uses the Quest hardware.
While chatting with Andrew Eiche, COO of Owlchemy Labs, we asked him how the team uses the best VR headset technology in Quest 2 to create a hand-tracking-focused experience. When asked about transferring the weight of an object and holding objects with this technology, often achieved through haptic feedback in the controllers, Eikhe says that our perception of various objects, such as coffee cups, helps.
“Bye [your mind] looking for that weight reaction, it’s just for balance. It’s not as necessary to the concept of holding the cup,” says Eikhe. “Then you go on to heavier objects, so we did some experiments because there are certain properties in transporting heavy objects. [that] have a visual representation. Even tactile sensations do not quite correspond to this.
“If you’re holding a broom handle, your body naturally stabilizes, but because it’s weighted at the end, there’s a gyroscopic effect,” Eikhe continues, detailing Vacation Simulator’s hand-tracking support. “If you start applying this, like we did with the lollipops in the vacation sim, you’ll add this gyroscopic effect so your wrist can’t click and all of a sudden you see the tip of the lollipop. Another example in some games is when you pick up items and the character’s arms stay down. We avoided this by trying to keep objects from being too heavy.
It’s clear that hand tracking remains at the core of Meta, which recently updated the original Oculus Quest with hand tracking 2.0 support. While it’s unclear if the next Owlchemy Labs game will support older Quest headsets alongside the Quest 2, we do expect support for future headsets like the Meta Quest Pro and Oculus Quest 3. If you’d like more information, we’ll send it to you. Full interview soon.
