Plague Tale: Requiem “not given” after “Innocence”

A Plague Tale: Requiem will follow in the footsteps of its predecessor A Plague Tale: Innocence and become one of the best rat games out there. Asobo Studio’s sequel to the tense sibling story is slated for October and offers the chance to interact with the hordes of rats that made the first game so dramatic and terrifying. However, lead level designer Kevin Pinson said that after Innocence was completed, the existence of a sequel was far from guaranteed.

“It wasn’t obvious,” Pinson told PCGamesN during our Gamescom meeting. “First of all, we know that we are a small team, since we were 40 years old, so we put our hearts into it. [A Plague Tale] Innocence, and we did what we wanted with the game. So seeing how the game was received was phenomenal for us: we read it all: every article, every review.

Despite Innocence’s critical success, a sequel was not immediately planned. “When we saw the reception, we thought about what we wanted to do next; it wasn’t a given that it was a sequel,” says Pinson. “We’re story-driven, so we think about the story first. It made sense in this story to bring Hugo and Amicia back and continue their journey, and that’s where we started. In fact, it’s a technique in the game that got us thinking about the sequel.

Also, the team currently has no plans for what’s next. The sequel’s subtitle, “Requiem,” a mass traditionally celebrated in memory of the dead, certainly sounds complete, but Pinzón says the team isn’t thinking about the future just yet. “To be completely transparent, we have no idea. Let’s see how the game will be received this month. As I said for the first one, we were waiting for feedback to see what would happen. We have nothing planned, that’s for sure.”

Pinson also references the “Requiem” subtitle, saying that it is in part a tribute to the game’s soundtrack and its main composer. “Music plays an important role in A Plague Tale. We are lucky to work with one of the best composers, Olivier Derivier, he is a great friend of ours. So it’s kind of a tribute to the work that he puts into the game and how that affects what we do.”

A Plague Tale: Requiem will be released on October 18 and will include ray tracing and Nvidia DLSS support on PC. In the meantime, check out the other best stealth games on PC to keep you busy.
