Dead Cells roadmap extended to 2023, its “most exciting year”

The prisoner may be dead, but Dead Cells certainly isn’t. Developer Motion Twin says it has plenty of plans for its Metroidvania roguelike, even after four full years of DLC and free updates.

“Reports of our deaths have been greatly exaggerated,” the Dead Cells team wrote in a recent Steam update. “To clear things up, we give you a little roadmap for the rest of the year. We’re pretty sure of the release dates and content, but there are no guarantees on the game’s development, so don’t take it for granted.”

The roadmap shared by the studio is, frankly, a bit primitive, and the three updates included in it don’t have specific dates: the developers hope to release one major update per season. The first, coming this summer, adds a new weapon called a “panchaku” (a set of nunchakus made from frying pans) and a fire head based on the adorable Dead Cells animated trailers.

This update will also include weapon and item rebalancing, an overhaul of the legendary item system to “make it more intuitive and engaging,” new Soul Knight weapons and gear, and the ability to pet your pets.

This fall, Motion Twin announces plans to add a boss battle mode that will allow you to take on every boss in the game one by one. There are items to unlock after each fight and a few different modes to keep things interesting.

Ultimately, the studio plans to release another free update before Christmas this year, but is keeping it under wraps for now.

However, this not all. Motion Twin says that things will heat up in 2023 and “it will be the biggest year since the release of 1.0.”

“Here we want to say that we are in the middle of the life of Dead Cells,” says Motion Twin. “We no longer sneak out at night to get drunk in the streets, but we still have enough life before our knees give out, so get ready for more Dead Cells content.”
