Ubisoft has revealed some details about the upcoming pirate game Skull & Bones. The latest update details ship equipment and explains how you can outfit your pirate ship with everything you need for a specific job or combat role.
In their latest devblog, the developers of Skull & Bones talk about the careful preparation you need to do before heading out to sea. Whether you’re raiding forts or fighting rival gangs of pirates, you’ll need a ship designed for the task. The developers say that your main considerations should be the size of the ship, its category, and the perks associated with it.
Ubisoft says that all of the ship’s customization items, including hulls, weapons, and accessories, can be crafted by the blacksmiths, carpenters, and woodworkers you’ll find in each pirate lair. You just need to bring the blueprints and raw materials for each component.
The post explains that large ships tend to be more intimidating on the high seas, but are useless for navigating rivers and exploring inland lakes. This is determined by the draft profile of the ship, and in turn, the size of the ship determines how many weapons you can put on it and which ones are compatible.
Ship categories include cargo, shipping, and combat ships, and while any ship can carry cargo or engage in combat, you’ll need specially designed ships when embarking on a specific mission. A ship designed to sail can sail far, but it lacks the hull space of a freighter or the fighting power of a fire engine.
Your boat’s category and specific hull will determine what advantages you’ll have, and can add crucial flexibility to your build options. A sail-type ship may have an advantage that adds extra cargo space, or one that stiffens its bow and makes it excellent for ramming blockades.
The post also contains details about the different weapons that you will be able to use in Skull & Bones. They range from cannons to mortars, ballistae and short-range flamethrowers of Greek fire. There’s even a weapon called a “bomb” that functions as a cross between a traditional cannon and a long-range mortar, as well as some rack-mounted rocket weapons.
You can also add furniture and pets, as no pirate ship is complete without at least one parrot and a few cats.
You won’t be limited to just one ship: as you gain infamy and wealth, you’ll be able to expand your fleet of ships so you always have the right ship for the job.
Skull & Bones is scheduled to release in November and will be available on Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store.
