Meta finally frees your Oculus Quest 2 from Facebook

Oculus Quest 2 headsets around the world will soon be relieved of their Facebook account requirements, as Meta has finally announced that it plans to release a new way for users to log in to their VR headsets. However, the functionality of social networks does not disappear completely for those who want to continue exchanging messages with their friends in the metaverse.

Starting in August 2022, Oculus Quest 2 users can expect a “Meta Account” pop-up login option to appear on their headset. Anyone who has already linked their Oculus and Facebook accounts will need to upgrade to a Meta account, after which they will be able to choose whether or not to link their social media profile.

This change is long overdue: Meta announced plans to remove its Facebook login requirements from October 2021, and the company confirmed its ambitions in May. You’ll most likely need a Meta account to sign into a future Project Cambria headset if you can find $1,000 or so to snag in the first place.

The introduction of alternative connection options adds another benefit to what is already the best VR headset on the market for those looking for a comprehensive solution, as user data will remain in Meta’s hands. Until Oculus Quest 3 arrives, that is, though it will most likely be called Meta Quest 3 at launch.
