Ethiopia was not one of the main protagonists of World War II, but it is a country that almost all Hearts of Iron IV players have faced; bag for Italy. , which could lead to the capitulation of the white world in a matter of weeks. However, Ethiopia will get its own focus tree and other improvements in the upcoming Hearts of Iron IV By Blood Alone DLC, with survivability and leveling as the goals.
In the latest Hearts of Iron IV Dev Diary, Paradox Content Designer Wrongwright explains some of the rationale behind the Ethiopian remake. It is a challenge: the team wants to make Ethiopia a unique experience, but the country starts in 1935 in the middle of a war that it has historically lost.
The Paradox fix described in the latest update looks really interesting. Ethiopia will have its own balance of power dynamic, similar to that of Italy and Switzerland, between centrally appointed Mekwanint officials on one side and traditional Mesafhinte nobility on the other.
The first step, of course, will be surviving the Italian invasion of the 1935 Italo-Ethiopian War. There will be various approaches to this, shaping what will be the first major decision Ethiopian players will have to make: try to fight? invaders on his own, cementing Emperor Haile Selassie’s role as Ethiopia’s “king of kings,” or will he take his case to the League of Nations?
Both paths hold exciting possibilities, such as reclaiming Jamaican rule over the British, or fighting for Ethiopia’s return from Italy while in exile, and deploying a patchwork of international volunteer divisions into the occupied territory.
Speaking of territory, the Ethiopian map is being updated with more provinces and victory point locations to make the war there more interesting than before. But aside from fighting, you must also be concerned with modernizing Ethiopia and turning it into an industrialized country, ready and equipped to compete on the world stage.
The full dev diary contains the details, along with a selection of works in progress that will accompany the update. By Blood Alone is due out later this year.
