This Skyrim Mod Wants To Sell You 16K Dragon Textures

There are almost countless mods for Skyrim, with one of the most popular categories being visual enhancements to take advantage of modern graphics hardware in an RPG. Now an avid modder wants to sell you the benefits of 16K dragons, no, not 16,000 of them flying at once (as funny as that sounds), but 16K resolution dragon textures.

According to modder XilaMonstrr, “Anyone using 4K textures should be using 16K dragon textures.” Why do I hear you ask? The simple answer, they explain, is that the dragons in Skyrim are very large. While that seems like an obvious statement, it does mean that when fighting a dragon up close, you’ll want their textures to be higher resolution to compensate for your close proximity.

The mods in question are upgraded versions of the “HD Dragon Replacement Pack” and “New Dragon Species” mods originally created for Skyrim by Bellyache that improve the textures of the dragons and add a selection of new dragon spawn options to the game world. open.

XilaMonstrr breaks down the numbers for the more technically curious among you, explaining that dragon texture files are twice as long as they are wide. “The 16K version contains 8192×16384 files,” they explain, “and I encourage you to think of it as two 8K files side by side rather than full 8K.”

They also point out that if you increase the number of dragons spawned to fight multiple dragons at the same time, your FPS may start to drop, but the lower resolution texture options are enabled for players, and that’s where it applies. XilaMonsterr insists that this is the bare minimum they recommend, but there are cut-down versions if you really think you should. Don’t tell anyone, what will the neighbors say?

Mods were available for both the original Skyrim and the Special Edition; you can find links to all of them on the Reddit thread. XilaMonstrr says that they intend to do the same with the original dragon models in the game, and “will be happy to clean up and scale any other dragon textures to 16K” if they get permission from the original creator.

If you don’t like dragons, well, maybe Skyrim isn’t the game for you, but if you still want to play a fantastic game, a Skyrim mod adds giant striped rats. The other practically allows you to deal with the pain of rejection, presumably from a particularly astute potential partner who discovered you were watching low-def dragons.
