It looks like Sony has registered a new PS5 model

The new PlayStation 5 model appears to have been registered by Sony in Japan.

In May 2021, Sony announced that they would start redesigning the PS5 in 2022. They received a building design certificate in April 2022, which means they have updated their radio equipment.

The certificate was issued to them by the Telecommunications Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan. This office is responsible for maintaining company radio equipment standards to ensure they are up to date. This particular model, which Sony has been certified for, is the CFI-1200 series, which is a newer model due to its special numbering according to VGC.

The CFI-1200 series should suffer similarly, as the 2021 redesign has no external changes. According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony said the hardware was “short” and it might be difficult to build more consoles due to the lack of components.

This isn’t an issue exclusive to Sony though, as Nintendo is struggling with the same issue. “At this point, the semiconductor shortage is not over,” said Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. Many different companies that make consoles are seeing real-time parts shortages.

Another Sony way of life is to blast and lock down COVID-19 in China, as it’s impossible to manufacture parts for their consoles and ship them as export goods. The solution to this problem may be new radio equipment and certification, as they struggle to keep up with console demand.

In February 2022, PS5 users in the US and UK saw an update that included voice commands. Group chat, a necessary feature for many, has also been introduced. Additionally, mono sound has become an option for those with headphones.

These upgrades, along with improved radio equipment, are Sony’s attempt to retain gamers until consoles are made fast enough to meet demand. The CFI-1200 series upgrade for radio gear is a new installment in Sony’s redesign tactics for the PS5.
