Looking at EA Sports’ FIFA series, the developers have proven over the years that they are more focused on perfecting the football simulator than making revolutionary changes. And it’s hard to blame them, because after all these years, bringing innovation to the football field is no longer a good thing. Especially when the hardcore fans are happy.
And, frankly, they have good reason. EA Sports FC 26 is perhaps the best version of virtual football you can play today. The ball feels natural, passes are more accurate, defending is more fun, and teammates are finally smarter at recognizing the position of the ball, including goalkeepers, so their tackles feel much more alive.
But EA continues to play according to its proven plan: every year a couple of cosmetic new products, a new number in the name and off we go. It works as long as existing fans buy it. What about those who would like to start for the first time or return after a long break?
I avoided this show for ten years. Now there was nowhere to run, because everyone in the editorial office was afraid to review football. This time I see it as a pleasant refreshment and challenge. However, my excitement about the first goals quickly gave way to disappointment. This football could be great. It’s just that the developers hide it behind so many submenus that it looks more like a side mode. And instead of enjoying the game, it feels like you spent half the time at a company meeting, where a tired colleague has been leafing through the presentation for half an hour. And you’re just wondering if you can get to that football before the console makes a dent in the wall of your room. It’s not her fault, but someone just needs to push it away.
