Company Enix Square continues to restructure its western branches. The Japanese company is cutting headcount in Europe and North America to make the business “leaner and more flexible.”
At this time, we do not know how many employees will experience layoffs. According to the VGC server, almost 140 people will lose their jobs in the London office alone. The changes will affect a wide range of departments – from IT and marketing to QA (quality control) and business planning. Company President Takashi Kiryu explained to employees that the goal is to “increase efficiency and global publishing capabilities.”
Square Enix estimates that these cost-saving measures will save the company over 3 billion yen (approximately US$19.6 million) per year. It seems that the Japanese giant is radically changing its publishing policy. The new image suggests that the company will release all future games simultaneously on all major platforms, that is, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, as well as Nintendo Switch 2.
The move represents a big departure from the previous strategy, in which many games, including Final Fantasy XVI or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, were released exclusively or for several years before only on PlayStation consoles. Square Enix is making it clear that it no longer wants to be considered “Sony’s backyard studio.”
