Noted analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana turned heads this week with an interesting analysis of the US video game market. In his report, Piscatell notes that the market for premium games (mostly AAA games that are not based on a free-to-play model) is largely relies on a relatively small group of dedicated playerswho buys more games.

In his analysis, he points primarily to statistics, which only 4% of US gamers pick up more than one new game per month. 22% are content with buying one game in three months, and 18% are content with buying even one game in six months.

The largest group, accounting for 33% of the US player base, consists of users who have been playing with one premium game for even more than a year. So, according to Piscatelli, without these enthusiasts, hardcore gamers might could not survive in the premium games market in its current form. The situation with free games or mobile games can be much different.
