Known for its perfect blend of football and rocket-propelled carts (or “soccar” – too perfect a pun anyway), Rocket League has never been one to shy away from any other gaming mix on game. We used to play basketball with the cars, ice hockey with the cars – we actually made the cars do more than just race. While it still doesn’t fully automate Mario Kart, we now have the next best thing: Super Smash Bros.
“Knockout” is a limited-time mode that will be coming to Psyonix’s football game next week as part of the in-game “Knockout Bash” event. The goal of the mode is simple: you hit your opponents with your car so hard whether they fly out of the arena or are in mortal danger. The number of deaths is limited and the last car standing wins.
Running from April 27 through May 10, the event offers players the chance to win Gold Gift Baskets that will earn you classic rare items from past Rocket League events. The mod kicks off in the middle of Season 6 themed self-rewarding animation, which features several unique Rocket League leaderboards. So now seems like a good time to fire up some old rocket cars and run them around for a while.
Knockout adds a few changes to your usual Rocket League experience beyond the fact that you’re now encouraged to smash other cars (although you can and still should). Firstly, there are no teams in this mode – instead, it’s free for all with 8 players, unlike Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s 8-player smash mode. Or really, a Battle Royale – if you forget we use that term for games with lots of players on large open maps and not just when a deathmatch mode is included.

Another change is the overhaul of the core gameplay when the rock-paper-scissors combat design is implemented. You activate an attack or block that can cause your opponent to explode, depending on whether you run towards or against an opponent. And if you hold the ‘hold’ button (no matter what), you can pick up and launch an enemy car – as long as you’re not attacking, in which case you can kiss the sky.
Other changes like triple jump ability (like Pit from Super Smash Bros), stun (like Zero Suit Samus from Super Smash Bros) and multiple dodge (in fact no one in Smash can hit more than Once). dodging the sky, so it goes to Rocket League). The game mode also features three arenas built specifically for the mode, each with hazards and traps to keep players on their wheels.
With the new mode, new season, and the Rocket League Championship Series set to return in June, it will be exciting to see if this will reignite interest in the evergreen esports game. Thanks to the latest performance upgrade on consoles, Rocket League has made our list of the best PS5 multiplayer games, so we’re keeping an eye on it.
