Johan Pilestedtcreative director of the game Helldivers 2 Swedish studio Arrowhead, sparked a debate on social media when it joined the debate on whether games should reflect modern politics and topics such as diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI). His answers raised questions about whether Helldivers 2 contained political overtones or not.
The discussion began with a simple post in which Pilestedt asked fans for their thoughts on Arrowhead’s future projects. But one player’s comments took a different turn when the user recommended: “Don’t add DEI content to your games.” Pilestedt responded: “If something doesn’t make the game better, it makes it worse. Games should be purely about the pursuit of great moments.”
Although Pilestedt emphasized that he does not want to engage in contemporary political statements, many fans noted that the world of Helldivers 2 has strong political parallels. For those who don’t know, Helldivers 2 satirically reflects far-right ideologies and themes, such as invading planets for raw materials or fighting communism, Pilestedt argues that games should not comment on current politics.
I don’t like labels. But on Super Earth, humanity is united in its extreme xenophobia. #Inclusion so maybe it’s DEI?
I really don’t care. Make good games, don’t make modern political statements.
