Ken Levinecult creator BioShockshared new details about her unconventional first-person shooter Judas. While the game may at first glance resemble his earlier games (in the video it looks like BioShock in space), Levine emphasizes that it is a completely different approach to game design and storytelling.

According to Levin Judas fundamentally abandons the linear structure known from BioShock.. Instead of predetermined storylines, the game focuses on dynamic responses to the player’s actions. “In BioShock we had a structure that was like a long hallway with multiple story triggers.” Levine explains in an interview with GamesIndustry. “However, Judas is completely different – it is a game that is much more reflects the player’s decisions and their impact on the world

Levine describes his approach as “LEGO storytelling“, where individual story elements come together based on the player’s actions. The characters in the game will not only observe the player’s actions, but also actively react to them. “We’re creating a system where NPCs analyze and comment on a wide range of player decisions.” Levin adds.

For example, characters might say: “I saw what you did and how it affected something else. It was interesting.” This type of interaction is expected to become one of the main pillars of Judas and offer players deeper connection with the game world.

Geoff Keighley a while ago he compared the history of LEGO to the Nemesis system. It was created by Monolith Productions for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Your actions influenced the behavior of enemy leaders. They might fear you and also ridicule you when you fail.

At the same time, Levin admits that this the new approach places enormous demands on developers. Branching story options and a non-linear world are much more difficult to design than traditional linear games. “It’s a little more challenging than anything we’ve done before.” he admits.

Judas is being developed by Ghost Story Games, which Ken Levine founded in February 2017 after leaving Irrational Games. A release date has not yet been determined, but the game should be released later this year on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
