The three-act structure of exposition, confrontation, and resolution is a storytelling style found in almost every film and borrowed from video games. But some break away from the norm and are not afraid to take the plot beyond madness. And we’ll talk about exactly ten of them today.

There’s a lot of controversy behind The Last of Us Part 2, but if there’s one thing we can’t deny it, it’s its willingness to take risks with its story. The first part of the game is completely simple. Ellie heads to Seattle to take revenge, brutally killing a group of enemies and fighting her way through the corpses for a final confrontation.

But just before this happens, you as the player are transported back a few days, almost to the beginning of Ellie’s journey, which you will now follow through the eyes of the second main character, Abby. You will feel the effects of the destruction you left behind earlier. Here, one could argue that there is a lack of story pacing, since right before the ending you are forced to play through additional hours of gameplay that would be enough for the entire next game. Plus, you know the fates of many of the characters in advance, so it’s hard to form an emotional connection with them when you know they’re going to die in a moment anyway. We’ll see if the upcoming second season of the HBO series follows a similar path.
