Chinese giant Tencent and its sister studio Polaris Quest found themselves at the center of controversy due to their recently unveiled game Motiram Light. It’s clear from the images and trailer that the Horizon series has inspired us.
The Polaris Quest developers shamelessly copy iconic elements from Horizon: Zero Dawn And Horizon Forbidden Westfrom game mechanics to visual style. You can see it everywhere. Players on social networks especially note car design. They mark them as copy without trying to innovate.
“They could at least change the colors – maybe use chrome instead of white. But this is just plagiarism.” writes one Reddit user.
The action of “The Light of Motiram” takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where the landscape is controlled by mechanical animals – the so-called Mechanics. As in Horizon, these creatures form the core element of the game world. Players may encounter, for example, mechanical gorillas, deer or bulls, which have a visually striking resemblance to the machines from Guerrilla Games’ games.
The description promises challenges in the form of changing weather, dangerous mechanical creatures and the remains of ancient civilizations. According to the developers, mechanical animals can either be tamed or neutralized.
However, several differences can be found. The light of Motiram will have cooperative multiplayer, possibility of building sheltersresource extraction and other common things related to survival. However, these innovations have not silenced critics. Many players still find the similarities to Horizon too obvious.
“It’s not just inspiration, it’s very much a copy. The people at Guerrilla Games should take a look at this.” adds another Reddit user. The combat system, in turn, was apparently inspired by the series Monster Hunter from Capcom.
Neither Tencent nor the Polaris Quest studio have yet officially responded to the allegations. It is unclear whether Guerrilla Games or Sony plan to take legal action. The game doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but it does have a Steam page where you can add it to your wishlist. No other platforms have been announced. It looks like the game will be free.
