One of the most prominent figures in the gaming industry, Shuhei Yoshidaannounced that he would be leaving his post after more than three decades at Sony. He will officially retire on January 15, 2025. Thus, PlayStation will lose one of its fathers.
Yoshida, now 60, joined Sony in 1993 and played a key role in the development of the first PlayStation console. He was one of the first non-technical members of Ken Kutaragi’s team to lead the project. His task was to convince developers and publishers to support the new console, a task that he describes in retrospect as “very difficult, but at the same time exciting.”
During his career at Sony, Yoshida held various leadership positions, including President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios (now PlayStation Studios). In recent years, focused on supporting independent developers as head of the PlayStation Indies initiative.helping a number of small gaming teams bring their games to a wider audience. He has also contributed to the development of successful games including Gran Turisma, Ape Escape, The Legend of Dragoon, Jak and Daxter, SOCOM US Navy SEALs and ATV Offroad Fury.
Shuhei Yoshida decided to leave Sony last year after celebrating 30 years with the company. “When I reached that goal, I started to think that maybe it was time to move on,” he explained on the PlayStation podcast. He stressed that PlayStation is in good hands thanks to a new generation of managers. He respects and admires you very much.
Yoshida suggested that has no plans to retire and intends to continue supporting indie games.. He describes his passion for indie games as key, as they often bring innovation and new game genres that are important to the future of the games industry.
