While Sony is releasing the PlayStation 5 Pro console today, AMD is preparing to release the highly anticipated Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the successor to the popular Ryzen 7 7800X3D, on the same day. And while the base Zen 5 had only minimal gains in gaming performance over Zen 4, the processor with V-Cache was significantly better and surprised many reviewers.

Hardware Unboxed’s Steve averaged an 11% performance increase over its predecessor across 14 games, beating the competing Intel Core i9-14900K by 27% and the new Ultra 9285K by 33%. These are truly huge gaps, and it should also be added that the 285K was at least somewhat competitive (less than 10% difference) in only three games, in most games AMD’s advantage was over 30%, and in Assetto Corsa Competizione for example it was an incredible 75% .

If you look at the comparison with the Ryzen 7 9700X, on which the new processor with V-Cache is based, the 9800X3D is 30% more powerful in games. But the results under load are surprising. While previous generation models with V-Cache had a smaller performance hit, here the 9800X3D outperforms the base model. In the multi-core Cinebench benchmark, it scored 1384 points, while the 9700X scored “only” 1201. And in Photoshop, for example, it is quite confidently the fastest processor.

But back to gaming, where Gamers Nexus or Techpowerup reviews are also reporting solid growth. Eurogamer magazine took a closer look at games that are very processor-intensive and found that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D leads in games such as Dragon’s Dogma 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield or Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

Still, the new processor has one drawback – consumption. Although it’s slightly lower in gaming than the 9700X, the processor with V-Cache consumes quite noticeably more than its predecessor 7800X3D (which remains the most efficient), by about 30%, according to Techpowerup magazine. However, the 9800X3D is still one of the lowest consuming processors in gaming and quite clearly beats Intel’s Raptor Lak and Arrow Lak competitors.

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D costs CZK 13,990 in the Czech Republic, you can buy the processor on Alza.cz.
