Console PlayStation 5 it came to market in two models: a standard version with an optical drive and a purely digital version. One model dominates among the players. However, Sony is going against the grain and will sell the PS5 Pro in a less popular version.
Circana’s analytics show that American players clearly prefer this model. PS5 with Blu-ray drive. In September of this year, the PS5 Digital Edition accounted for exactly 40% of PS5 units sold. Overall, however, the PS5 Digital Edition only has market share. 18%.
As it turns out, players are gradually finding their way to the Digital Edition. Why is this so? Analyst Mat Piscatella notes that there was an early issue with console availability. Not only in the US, it was easier to buy a standard model with a Blu-ray drive, which costs more. And so the players took what was available, and at the moment everything is enough. On the other hand, in September, 60% of buyers were still leaning towards the standard PS5 model with a Blu-ray drive.
Despite this, Sony will sell PS5 Pro without Blu-ray drive. The buyer will be able to purchase it separately.
PS5 hardware costs are down 45% compared to last year. For Xbox Series X/S this is minus 54%, and for Switch minus 23%. The best-selling console of September 2024 in the US continues to be the PS5, both in units and dollars. The second is Xbox Series X/S, and the third is Switch.
