Hideo Kojima spoke to Japanese magazine Famitsu about the upcoming film adaptation Death. He mainly attracted attention with the claim that he was trying to keep the film grounded and not make it a big blockbuster. In dialogue with the director Alex Garland points to the success of his film Civil War, which reinforces the ambitions of the production company A24, which both films share.

“Alex made Civil War a big hit. I feel like A24 is increasing the budget of Death Stranding and making it a massive project, so I’m trying to figure out how to keep the budget low,” Kojima exaggerates.

He also explains why he chose Hammerstone Studios at A24: “Other film companies that approached me basically offered me a big-budget film with lots of explosions, but I didn’t want that. I wanted to make a slightly different film with A24.”

At A24, directors and creators like us can make what we really want and we can have complete trust in the production.

Garland also praises working with an art production company: “It’s very different from working with a big Hollywood studio. I don’t mean anything bad, but working with big studios that have been around for a long time is what you might call big business, so it can be a little difficult for creators. At A24, directors and creators like us can make what we really want, and we can [produkci] trust completely. (…) I think this is a wise decision. A24 and Kojima are a great combination.”

Kojima also confirmed that he has no plans to direct the film. But he has already assured his fans that he keeps the content and form under control. We do not know the name of the director of Death Stranding, as well as the content and cast. However, according to Kojima’s earlier statements, this will not be an adaptation of the first game. The film will likely expand the growing world with its story.
