A new California law requires stores to notify customers that they do not own digital content and are only purchasing a temporary license. A similar notification should be everywhere where there are “buy” or “get” buttons.

AB 2426aimed at protecting consumers and against misleading advertising, applies to all digital content including games, movies and music. It does not prohibit stores from selling it, but rather transparently warns about the risks associated with this type of digital purchase.

If Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Nintendo eShop and other platforms want to sell content to California consumers, they will have to disclose the risks.

The law, which will go into effect in 2025 and has already been signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, is a response to consumer frustration with previously purchased content disappearing from libraries. Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about the removal of Ubisoft’s The Crew. Because of this, international groups have even been created to fight for the preservation of the games.

Let’s see if other US states and countries around the world join California.
