Stable 60 frames per second with significantly improved image quality.
In their latest podcast, Digital Foundry discussed several of the enhanced games that were revealed at the PS5 Pro reveal. They also got seven minutes of unedited gameplay footage of the PS5 Pro version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which Oliver Mackenzie dedicated a special clip to.
It’s unclear whether the game will also have two modes on the Pro console, but the footage is taken from the 60 FPS mode, which according to Mackenzie’s pixel count renders at around 1080p to 1296p, with the resolution upscaled to 4K. The internals are similar to the original Performance mode, but there’s one huge difference.
The original version only used a basic, apparently bilinear upscaling method, which resulted in a very blurry image. The PS5 Pro version uses Sony PSSR upscaling, and the results are much better, the image is sharper and retains all the details. In addition, the frame rate is completely stable at all times, even in demanding moments, when the game on the PS5 drops to somewhere around 50 FPS.
Perhaps even more interesting is the comparison with the PS5 graphics mode, which targets a dynamic 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. While the PS5 Pro version renders internally at a much lower resolution, PSSR does a very good job and can display some details better. Likewise, thanks to PSSR, the TAA anti-aliasing issues from the original game that caused significant halos or broke distant trees are gone. On the downside, PSSR causes a slight flickering of hair or vegetation and the image is not as stable.
Overall, this is a huge improvement, and probably the biggest we’ve seen in PS5 Pro versions of games.
