Chaos vs. Annapurna Interactive. All 25 employees of the independent publishing house, known for the games What Remains of Edith Finch, Outer Wilds, Stray and Cocoon, have resigned en masse.
Prior to this event, the staff had been in talks with parent company Annapurna Pictures about spinning off Annapurna Interactive and spinning off its publishing division into a separate company. Co-founder and owner Megan Ellison, but interrupted the meeting. This was followed by the resignation of Nathan Gary, president and co-founder of Annapurna Interactive. He was joined by his colleagues and other people from the team.
“All 25 members of Annapurna Interactive have collectively resigned,” Gary and his team announced in an official statement: “This was the hardest decision we have ever had to make and we did not make it lightly.”
The indie studios are in limbo. According to Bloomberg, they are unsure whether the agreements related to the release of their games will be fulfilled. Although a representative of Annapurna said that they continue to work with all partners. Meanwhile, the game creators received word from the new president Hector Sanchez, another co-founder who recently returned to Annapurna Interactive, that the entire publishing house staff will be replaced and all existing agreements and contracts are respected.
“Our top priority is to continue to support our developer and publisher partners during this transition. We are committed to not only continuing to offer existing games, but also to expanding our presence in the interactive space, continuing to look for opportunities to take a more integrated approach to linear and interactive storytelling across film and television, games and theatre.” – Allison said.
Annapurna Interactive is involved in the promotion of, for example, Silent Hill: Townfall from the studio No Code, also participating in the co-financing of the development of Control 2 from Remedy, and also collaborating on the expansion of the Control and Alan Wake games into the world of film, television and other areas.
